Yeonga Korean Restaurant

My parents retired & moved from Queensland fairly recently.  So with that in mind, they’re currently into money saving ‘bargains’ and ways to learn more about our fair city – Miss Melbourne!  So we agreed to join them for a fun night out courtesy of their Groupon voucher they purchased for $75 for a 9 Course Korean Banquet for Four valued at $236.

This is what we were served…

Appetiser platter to share (x2)

'mashed potato with eggs & herb, sweet sour daikon, kim chi, fresh cabbage'

Shared Entrees

Cajun chicken salad

Cajun chicken salad – we had only about a 2cm fragment of chicken each in the salad but had they left the ‘cajun chicken’ descriptor out of the title, it would have been a very tasty salad..

Seafood pancake - really tasty with lots and lots of vegetables. Central sweet chilli type of dressing to accompany the dish.

The BBQ meats followed:

short rib fillet, marinated beef mix, pork belly

It was a shame that only one of the meats had been marinaded!

It was a shame that only one of the meats had been marinaded!  Everything else was really bland unless you dunked it in one of the two sauces that they provided for the entire meal…

Squid & king prawn - the waitresses had been very particular about us not touching the food on the Korean BBQ until they had sliced it up and placed it on the edge of the BBQ rack.. even though it was supposedly a 'cook yourself banquet' so we ended up with burnt, rubbery squid which was completely inedible..

There was also a soup..

Beef soybean stew - to share

For dessert, the four of us were able to choose from two desserts to share.  The menu consisted of:

  1. Orange Panna Cotta
  2. Passion Fruits Mousse
  3. Raspberry cheesecake – their ‘signature dish’ but out of stock this evening
  4. Chocolate Mud cups
  5. Green Tea Ice Cream
  6. Black Sesame Ice Cream
  7. Cafe di Brazil
  8. Vanilla Ice Cream
  9. Very Raspberry Sorbet.

We were instructed to order our desserts at the start of the evening…

Passion Fruits Mousse

Despite being ordered 1.5 hour prior to having it delivered to our table, the mousse was rock hard. Don't get me wrong - it was very tasty but wasn't so much a mousse but an icy ice cream..

All in all, an enjoyable evening with the old folks, hubby and lil’ E.  The company was awesome, the food as expected, but the ‘real’ price of $236 being really quite alarming.  If you’re keen to spend that much, we recommend trying out Hwaro on Little Bourke Street down near King Street.  They have attentive staff, marinade all of their meats and you don’t smell any (street) sewerage from any of their seats.
