Mossgreen Tearooms in Armadale – for high tea served on Wedgwood

My heart skips a beat whenever I’m in the presence of Wedgwood.  And combined with an elegant, tasteful high tea – in the company of two wonderful women (and my own, well-behaved, children) – what’s a girl to do except act like a lady and have a jolly good time!

Years ago, I was obsessed with high teas.  It all began when my aunties took me on high tea adventures during my vacations to Canada.  I’ve been to countless high teas thus far in my life.  Not only to all the major hotels in Melbourne many times over, but my husband will no doubt be reluctant to admit that he’s even partaken in high teas in other parts of Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Hong Kong, and all the Fairmont Hotels around Canada with his beloved wife.  In fact, about 4 or 5 years ago, I had consumed so many high teas that I got quite sick of them and refrained from indulging in them more than once or twice a year.  Lately though, there’s been a bit of a resurgence in my high tea attendances.  This time, with my mother and children in tow, we have started frequenting Melbourne high teas outside of the usual 5 star hotel suspects.  A gorgeous family friend, came to Mossgreen Tearooms with us and we had such a wonderful time together that we’re all attending another high tea later this week – so stay tuned…

In the meantime, here are some photos from our high tea experience at Mossgreen Tearooms.  The setting was beautifully refined and elegant.  The Wedgwood was from the Butterfly Bloom collection, the food by the renowned Peter Rowland group, and the service at the tearoom was absolutely impeccable.  Mossgreen Tearooms is open for breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea.  What’s more, the high tea is very reasonably priced at $48 per person.  My mother, who requires a gluten-free diet, was catered for – without any additional charge.  And our family friend and I had a sneaking suspicion that on our non-gluten-free tiered platter we may have been given three serves instead of two.  When we enquired about it to our waiter, he smiled and told us that it may just happen to be our lucky day…

The high tea was everything that I expected and included tea or coffee, finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and a selection of petit fours. Mossgreen Tearooms 1280-14

We all chose a selection of T2 teas (I went for my all time favourite – Earl Grey), but you can also choose to have a Lavazza coffee. Mossgreen Tearooms 1280-17

Although they usually make a batch of gluten-free scones in the morning for high tea, the chef didn’t when we attended due to the fact that my mother was the only person who made a gluten-free booking on the day.  She was, however, quite pleased with the gluten free brownies with raspberry jam and clotted cream that were served in lieu of the scones.

Her tiered platter included a selection of sandwiches served on gluten-free bread, as well as some salmon and cream cheese egg rolls which were beautifully presented. Mossgreen Tearooms 1280-20

Her top tier included macarons and mostly mousse-filled miniature cakes.  Never-the-less, my mother thoroughly enjoyed the selection of gluten-free treats.Mossgreen Tearooms 1280-21

In a little more detail..

High Tea Sandwiches – smoked salmon, cucumber cream cheese, Waldorf chicken, aged cheddar & relish
Mossgreen Tearooms 1280-24 These were beautiful.  Fresh bread, crusts removed, the obligatory cucumber & cream cheese sandwich in tow – I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

A selection of daily baked petit fours and savoury French piesMossgreen Tearooms 1280-25The meat pies were divine – wrapped in delicate puff pastry; and the quiches were absolutely gorgeous – with whole roasted hazelnuts peppered throughout.

Classic scones – Rosie’s raspberry jam & Jersey double creamMossgreen Tearooms 1280-26These were fabulous.  Tiny, warm, bite-sized morsels which were crunchy on the outside and soft and tender within.  They just happened to be lovely and uniform as well.

Macarons by Josephine & baked petit fours Mossgreen Tearooms 1280-28The macarons by Josephine were, as expected, outstanding.  But the lemon meringue tarts, chocolate and raspberry cakes, and caramel eclairs were equally as wonderful.

All in all, an absolutely unforgettable experience.  Mossgreen Tearooms is definitely worth attending with a group of girlfriends – even just to ogle the beautiful fine bone china in the flesh…  In fact, my mother recently reported that she has already been back!
